Jesolo is the City Beach of Veneto, a perfect seaside resort for comfortable and easy-to-organise holidays that can make young people, families, couples and the elderly equally happy. To call it the ‘sea of Venice’ is reductive: its five million tourists come not only from all over the Veneto, but also from Germany, Holland and other European countries.

Why come here? For the 15-km-long beach, the longest pedestrian island in Europe, unbridled nightlife, a hinterland of wild charm or the stunningly designed buildings. Perhaps because you can come here to do absolutely nothing, or to do everything.

For many years, Jesolo was the queen of summer nightlife in the Veneto. Its historic clubs set the trend; the beach bars and pubs in the centre saw the birth of who knows how many summer flirtations.

Today, nightlife is still an important component of Jesolo’s tourist offer, but the city has radically changed its image by focusing on sustainable holidays, accessibility and design. It has equipped itself with pedestrian streets, cycle paths, services for differently-abled tourists, a packed calendar of cultural events and splendid examples of contemporary architecture.

These interventions have not only made a resort that has already given dream summers to millions and millions of holidaymakers even more enjoyable, but have extended the time to visit Jesolo to the whole year round.

If you come when it is too cold to swim in the sea, turn your gaze inland: the Jesolo peninsula wedges into the Venetian lagoon and is marked by rivers and canals. Lagoons and pine forests of wild charm coexist with rural areas of gentler beauty: dreamlike settings for cycling and walking in complete relaxation.

Jesolo's beaches

1La Spiaggia di Jesolo, Via dei Pioppi 3° Accesso al Mare, 6, 30016 Lido di Jesolo VE, Italy

There is only one beach in Jesolo, but it is so vast that it can accommodate millions of bathers every year. It is a very long beach of golden sand that stretches from the mouth of the Sile to that of the Piave for a total of no less than 15 km; it is between 30 and 100 metres wide. Some areas are equipped with bathing establishments, some are reserved for hotels and campsites, and some are free.

The sea is surprisingly clean, clearer than in other areas of the Adriatic Riviera; the seabed is shallow and gently sloping, allowing safe swimming and water games.

The soft, fine sand is highly valued for its therapeutic and healing properties and has long been used to treat rickets, rheumatism and osteoporosis.

The jewel in the crown of Jesolo’s beaches, both free and equipped, however, is the quality of the services: from the classic ones you would expect to find in any seaside resort, such as deckchair and beach umbrella hire, showers, first aid, lifeguards, entertainment, and sports fields, to more innovative services such as on-line booking of places on the beach, automatic beach umbrellas, electronic safes, and measures to increase the accessibility of beaches for the disabled.

Jesolo has also been a pioneer in dog-friendly holidays. As many as three beaches are dedicated to those travelling with their four-legged friends, including the first beach on the Adriatic Riviera with dog-friendly access to the sea.

That these services are of the highest level is demonstrated by the fact that Jesolo is one of the very few places to have been awarded the Blue Flag for more than 15 years in a row. It can also boast the Green Flag, the Pediatricians’ Association award for safe beaches suitable for families with young children.

Things to do in Jesolo

Like all famous seaside resorts, Jesolo did not build its fortune on museums and famous monuments. Let’s see what places not to miss in this renowned Veneto resort.

Via Bafile

2Via Bafile, 30016 Lido di Jesolo VE, Italy

The top attraction in Jesolo, after the beach of course, is Via Bafile, a very long pedestrian avenue parallel to the seafront that crosses practically the entire Lido area. It is the shopping street, the nightlife street, the ‘tub street’… everyone passes through here, and often several times a day.

It is considered the longest pedestrian island in Europe.

Pineta Park

3Via Sebastiano Venier, 30016 Jesolo VE, Italy

When the heat gets too much, you can take refuge in the beautiful Pineta Park, a green area of over 16,000 square metres not far from the beach. To enhance the pine forest and make it a place of relaxation loved by citizens and holidaymakers alike, the municipality turned to Portuguese landscape architect João Ferreira Nunes.

Today, the pine forest can be visited by following paths on wooden footbridges along which information panels on the local flora and fauna are arranged.

Drago Square

4Piazza Drago, 30016 Lido di Jesolo VE, Italy

Drago Square is one of Jesolo’s focal points, a short distance from Via Bafile and the seafront.

The area is dominated by two modern glass, marble and aluminium skyscraper-towers that have been given evocative names, Alioth and Mizar, the two brightest stars of Ursa Major, but to everyone they are simply the towers of Drago Square. At night they are illuminated with LED lights.

Jesolo Lighthouse

5Faro di Jesolo, 30013 Cavallino-Treporti VE, Italy

The Spiaggia del Faro (Lighthouse Beach), the final stretch of Jesolo beach in a south-westerly direction, is so called because of the presence of a lighthouse that can be seen on the opposite bank of the mouth of the Sile (territory of the municipality of Cavallino).

It is not isolated and solitary like a lighthouse on a distant island, but it has its own seafaring charm and a long history. It was built in the 19th century, but the characteristic black stripes were only painted in 1936; destroyed during the Second World War, it was rebuilt a few years later.

For many young people on holiday in Jesolo, the Lighthouse beach is known as a location for concerts and popular events.

Architecture and design in Jesolo

A decisive turning point for the city’s image came in the 1990s with the urban development plan signed by the internationally renowned architect Kenzo Tange. Since then Jesolo has wanted to reinvent itself as a city of the future, harmonious and environmentally aware.

Famous international architects such as Carlos Ferrater, Richard Meier, Gonçalo Byrne, Ferreira Nunes and Zaha Hadid have left their creative mark on Jesolo. They are responsible for some of the most beautiful and innovative hotels, resorts and multifunctional centres.

Family-friendly attractions in Jesolo

Jesolo is the ideal location for an unforgettable family holiday: the beach is safe and the countless opportunities for fun will delight everyone, from babies to grown-up children. It is no coincidence that many families return year after year, and for many children and teenagers in the North-East summer is synonymous with holidays in Jesolo.

Here are the most interesting attractions for an hour or a day of family fun to add to the beach, sports fields and go-kart tracks.

Caribe Bay

6Via Michelangelo Buonarroti, 15/A, 30016 Lido di Jesolo VE, Italy

Jesolo was one of the first Italian seaside resorts to have an aqua park: the famous Aqualandia has been open since 1989 and has been awarded the title of best aqua park in Italy several times. In 2019 it changes its name and becomes Caribe Bay, but for many it is still and always will be Aqualandia.

Inside you will find slides of different lengths and gradients (including the adrenaline-filled Spacemaker, which allows you to reach speeds of 100 km/h), bungee jumping, minigolf, a show stage and a disco.

Sunny Aquapark

7Via Dalmazia, 10, 30016 Lido di Jesolo VE, Italy

From a historic aquapark we move on to a very recent and innovative one: the Sunny Aquapark in Jesolo is the only floating water amusement park in the Upper Adriatic.

It consists of a series of inflatable platforms floating on the sea, a veritable artificial island dedicated to fun with slides, balance games, climbing walls, acrobatic games, and more. There are courses for children from 6 years old, for teens and for adults.

Gommapiuma

8Via Firenze, 16, 30016 Lido di Jesolo, Jesolo VE, Italy

Inflatables also at Gommapiuma, but this time you will find them firmly anchored to dry land: Gommapiuma is in fact a classic amusement park for children from 0 to 12 years old with inflatable castles and slides, jumping nets, and a ball pit.

There are two locations in Jesolo, one in the Pineta area and one at Lido. The latter is the largest, with a surface area of no less than 4000 square metres. Opening hours are in the evening.

Tropicarium Park

9Via Aquileia, 123, 30016 Lido di Jesolo VE, Italy

Tropicarium Park is the Jesolo attraction that with a single ticket allows you to enter three different natural habitats and get to know many animal species.

The largest thematic area is the one that gives the park its name: here your children can admire geckos, iguanas, turtles, snakes, water dragons and other fascinating creatures. The other two areas are Predators, dedicated to crocodiles and sharks, and Aquarium, dedicated to colourful tropical fish.

Sea Life

10Piazza Venezia, 28/29, 30016 Lido di Jesolo VE, Italy

Sea Life is the Aquarium of Jesolo. Similar in layout to other aquariums in the same international chain, the Jesolo site has more than 35 themed tanks, including a beautiful ring tank and an oceanic tunnel, allowing visitors to admire the wonderful inhabitants of the underwater world.

There is also a section entirely dedicated to the Venice Lagoon, a unique ecosystem where very few animal and plant species can survive, including some native species unique to the world.

New Jesolandia amusement park

11Via Lucio Battisti, 30016 Jesolo VE, Italy

New Jesolandia is an amusement park for evening family fun. Open from 8 p.m. until late at night, it has more than 35 attractions for children and young people and numerous refreshment stands.

From classic fairground games, such as the Swan Fishing, to thrill rides such as the Matrix or the Tornado, there is something for the whole family in this somewhat retro funfair.

City parks

Of the seven city parks in the Jesolo area, five are equipped with children’s play areas:

In the summer months, some of these parks, in particular the charming Swan Park, become splendid open-air locations for events and shows for children.

Admission to the parks is free; opening hours vary depending on the park.

In the following map you can see the location of the main places of interest mentioned in this article.

What to do in Jesolo

Getting bored in Jesolo is really impossible: for those who don’t want to spend their whole holiday lying under a beach umbrella, there are so many things to do that they can experience completely different days.

Water sports

As a seaside resort, Jesolo has a long tradition of water sports. Swimming, diving, apnea or sailing courses are on offer, but you can also enjoy surfing or try your hand at activities such as sup, aquascooting and paraflying.

Bike

Jesolo is a true paradise for cycle excursionists. Thanks to the municipal administration’s commitment to promoting sustainable mobility, it is now possible to take advantage of a network of cycle paths with routes of all levels, from easy rides within everyone’s reach to sporting exploits reserved for enthusiasts in good shape.

Already in 2009 Jesolo launched the Jesolo Ambient Bike programme with the aim of attracting cyclists from all over the world to the city.

Dedicated to them are 12 bike routes designed to acquaint tourists in the saddle with the unique scenic beauty of Jesolo’s surroundings. There is no lack of themed routes, for example dedicated to the sites of the First World War or to the most fascinating villages on the Jesolo peninsula.

Cycle tourists can count on numerous services, including bike hire, bike sharing and bike hotels.

Trekking

The list of outdoor activities that can be practised in Jesolo is not complete if we do not also mention hiking. Of course, we are not talking about high-altitude trekking (but if you want that too, the Dolomites are only a two-hour drive away…), but rather excursions along inland trails: they are a fascinating way to explore the unique landscape created by water and man’s work.

A route of considerable natural and historical interest is the one that leads from Jesolo to the gates of Cavallino along the road of the same name and the left bank of the Sile-Piave Vecchia. The round trip length is 21.5 km; calculate approximately six and a half hours.

Boat trips

Do not miss the opportunity during your holiday in Jesolo to take a boat trip: there are many different itineraries and types of boat to choose from, so you are sure to find a type of experience to suit your taste and budget.

The most typical boat trip from Jesolo is to the historic centre of Venice or to the most famous islands in the lagoon (Murano, Burano and Torcello).

If you do not want to take part in a group tour, you can opt for the vaporetto, but in this case you will first have to travel by car or bus to Punta Sabbioni (about 15 km away from the centre of Jesolo). From the Punta Sabbioni stop there are three vaporetto lines to the centre of Venice; some also stop at the islands of Murano, Burano and the Venice Lido.

A completely different experience but highly recommended for nature lovers is river tourism on the Litoranea Veneta, a river route built during the period of the Serenissima Republic and still practicable today by canoe, rowing boats or small motor boats.

During a boat trip along the Litoranea you will navigate along natural and artificial canals, rivers and lagoons; before your eyes will be a very special landscape, with very wild areas and others where nature and man coexist harmoniously.

If you love pirate films, treat yourself to a cruise on board the Jolly Roger, a modern galleon inspired by the historic ships of the Serenissima. Jolly Roger cruises are not an excursion but a fun family adventure with games, music and pirate-themed gadgets.

Dedicated instead to adults is the Dinner Cruise in Venice, the cruise that allows you to enjoy a fine dinner on board the Jolly Roger while admiring a wonderful view of Venice. The galleon can also be hired for private events and weddings.

Shopping

Why not take advantage of a holiday in Jesolo to renew your wardrobe or furnish your home? Between big name boutiques, street markets, independent shops and artisan workshops, the town allows you to enjoy all the shopping experiences you desire.

There is also a shopping centre, perfect if a rainy day happens, and for the more avid shoppers there is also the McArthurGlen Designer Outlet 25 km away.

Entertainment and nightlife in Jesolo

Jesolo’s nightlife is legendary: of all the seaside resorts in the Veneto region, Jesolo is the only one that has managed to develop an entertainment industry on such a scale and become the benchmark for young people’s holidays in north-eastern Italy.

Via Bafile is a continuous bustle of people at all hours of the day and night; in addition to the music pubs and cocktail bars in the pedestrian area, there are numerous beach bars that organise young people’s aperitifs and the discos and clubs outside the pedestrian area, concentrated in the south-eastern part of the city in the direction of the marina.

There are many clubs in Jesolo that have made the history of nightlife on the Adriatic Riviera, but for those visiting the Rimini of the north-east today, the places not to be missed are the disco Il Muretto, the beach bar La Capannina, and the Morgan Pub.

Where to stay in Jesolo

The territory of the municipality of Jesolo is divided into three distinct areas: Lido di Jesolo, Jesolo Paese and Jesolo Laguna; of these the area of greatest tourist interest is Lido, where almost all hotels, flats and holiday homes are concentrated. In total, there are almost 400 hotels in Jesolo: a truly vast choice to meet all needs.

Within the Lido there is no better area to stay: it depends on the type of holiday you want to take. Via Bafile and the Lungomare are the two most popular streets, where everyone wants to grab a room or a flat, even a small studio. Both are perfect for those who want everything at their fingertips, but the former is definitely not recommended for those who like to go to bed early.

The sea-view hotels and studio apartments on Via Bafile are the most popular accommodations in Jesolo, which means high prices and availability that sells out quickly. If you don’t like the hustle and bustle or if you are looking for cheap hotels, move away from these two ‘hotspots’, towards the hinterland or towards the southern or northern end of Jesolo.

How to reach Jesolo

Jesolo can be easily reached by car by taking the A4 motorway, which crosses the entire plain. The recommended exits are Venice-Marco Polo/Jesolo airport (for those coming from Padua, Verona, Milan) and Noventa di Piave (for those coming from Tarvisio, Udine or Trieste); in both cases once you exit the motorway you will find signs for Jesolo.

Getting to Jesolo by public transport is also very convenient, although the city does not have a train station.

The easiest way is to take a train to Venezia Mestre, a station served by numerous regional, intercity and high-speed trains, and from there take a shuttle bus from the station. The runs are very frequent and it is possible to buy a combined train+bus ticket.

It is also possible to arrive directly by bus: there are many bus connections to/from Jesolo.

Less than 50 km away from Jesolo are two airports, both served by low-cost flights departing from numerous Italian cities: Marco Polo airport in Venice (30 km away) and Antonio Canova airport in Treviso (45 km away).
