Arriving in Venice by plane is a convenient and economical solution from all parts of Italy, and beyond: Venice International Airport (IATA code: VCE) is in fact one of the most important airports in Italy, after Rome and Milan, served by national and international flights to more than 70 destinations worldwide. More than 50 airlines operate out of Venice airport, including low-cost and flag carriers.
The official name of this ultra-modern airport is Venezia Marco Polo, but it is also called Venezia Tessera after the place where it is located, just 13 km from the city centre and well connected by roads and public transport.
The cheapest way to get to the centre of Venice from the airport is to take one of the many shuttle buses departing just outside the passenger terminal.
Two companies operate this connection, ATVO and ACTV, but the service is essentially the same in both price and journey time (about 20-25 minutes).
The shuttle buses from the airport stop at Mestre and at Piazzale Roma, the area in the centre of Venice beyond which it is not possible to continue by land: from there you can reach all the other parts of the centre on foot or by vaporetto.
However, it is not possible to travel by train from Venice airport to the city centre as Tessera airport does not have a railway station.
An unusual and decidedly charming way to reach the centre of Venice from the airport is by water.
The Alilaguna company offers low-cost vaporetto connections that stop near the most interesting sights; if you want to go faster, you can opt for a private water taxi, which is more comfortable but definitely more expensive. To cut the cost of a water taxi transfer book it online before your departure.
You can also reach Piazzale Roma by taxi: if you split the cost between several people the price is affordable. Taxis can be found just outside the arrivals terminal.
An alternative to TAXIs is to book in advance a private transfer to or from Venice Airport airport. A driver will pick you up at the airport arrivals (thus avoiding taxi queues), at your hotel or wherever you prefer, to take you to the desired address.
It is the best solution if you do not want to waste time, do not want to use public transport, have a lot of luggage or are travelling in a group. To book a private transfer to or from Venice Airport airport visit this site.
Venice Marco Polo is the reference airport in the north-east of Italy, so you can count on excellent connections with all the main tourist attractions in and around Veneto. Whether you are flying here for a seaside, mountain or cultural holiday, you will have no difficulty in reaching your final destination.
The airport is located in a strategic position, very convenient for those travelling by car: it is in fact situated along a ring road that provides quick access to all the main roads in the north-east, including the A4 Trieste-Venezia-Milano-Torino motorway, the A13 Padova-Bologna and the A27 Venezia-Belluno.
To rent a car in Venice we always recommend comparing the rates of all companies with DiscoverCars because in our opinion it offers the best prices, allows cancellation up to 48 hours before rental and offers a very cheap comprehensive insurance policy.
Frequent direct buses connect the passenger terminal in Venice to the Veneto cities of Padua and Treviso; Pordenone in Friuli and Ljubljana in Slovenia can also be reached by bus, without changes (in this case, however, the frequency of journeys is lower).
Sea resorts that can be easily reached by bus from Venice airport are Jesolo, Cavallino, Eraclea Mare, Caorle and Bibione.
If you prefer the mountains, you can reach your holiday resort on board the Cortina Express bus, Dolomiti Ski Shuttle or the ATVO Venice-Cortina public bus. Consult the timetables before your departure as many buses to the sea and mountain resorts are seasonal.
To travel by train, you will first need to travel by bus to the Venezia Santa Lucia train station (in the historic centre) or Venezia Mestre (on the mainland).
Both stations are located along the main railway lines in northern Italy and are served by regional, intercity and high-speed trains with which you can reach all the main locations in the Veneto region and other destinations such as Milan, Turin and Trieste without changes.
