Venice’s climate is of a moderate continental type, with cold winters and hot summers that generally do not reach extreme temperatures.
The typical Po Valley climate is slightly mitigated here by the proximity of the sea, but the humidity remains very high. This translates in winter into a perception of coldness greater than the actual temperatures; in summer into sultry heat during the day and night and a large number of mosquitoes, both of which are difficult to bear.
Fog in winter is a very frequent phenomenon: it can be annoying, but it also has its own charm. Snow, on the other hand, is rarer. The phenomenon of high water is not related to seasonality but to the combination of wind and tides; statistically, however, it occurs more frequently in the period from November to December.
Since it is a very touristy city, all high season periods, i.e. bridges, holidays and August, should be avoided if possible. Considering both climate and tourist influx, the best months to go to Venice are April/May (excluding Easter and bridges) or September/early October.
Don’t worry if you don’t have much freedom in choosing the period of your holiday. With its large number of attractions (including many museums and indoor monuments) and a busy calendar of events Venice can be visited at any time of the year.
The hottest months of the year in Venice are August and July, when the monthly average temperature reaches 28 °C, while the coldest months of February, December and January the thermometer drops up to 0 °C.
