Verona is a welcoming and hospitable city that lends itself to being the ideal destination for a romantic weekend in the company of friends or family. There are several sites of interest to see, starting from the Arena or Juliet’s famous balcony to Castelvecchio: in Verona you can discover a city full of history and charm. If you have planned a few days in the Scaliger city, therefore, it is also crucial to choose the right area where to sleep order to optimise your visit.
Some accommodations are more suitable for a trip as a couple while others are more for families with children. In the city, there are small but cosy B&Bs, luxury hotels with high-end services but also hostels that know how to combine budget and comfort. In this article you will find a mini-guide to the different districts of Verona with the most recommended establishments in the area and sites of interest not to be missed.
The historic centre of Verona is also known as the Old Town and is the area enclosed within the city walls. This area contains the most interesting sites such as the Arena, Piazza delle Erbe, Juliet’s House and the Duomo, making it one of the best areas in which to stay.
The historical centre is also full of shops, bars, clubs and restaurants of different types and price ranges, and the atmosphere here is very special both during the day and at night. The centrality and convenience of the area, however, means that establishments here are the most expensive, but if you book in advance you can always find some bargains.
This district is characterised not only by luxurious hotels or accommodation in historical buildings but also by small B&Bs with a family atmosphere. Another problem you may have if you reach the city by car is the scarcity of parking spaces, so try to find an accommodation with a garage or private parking.
Just outside the centre, moving southwards, is the Cittadella district, which is the best choice for those arriving in Verona by car as there are several public car parks here. In addition, Cittadella is a quiet area with all services but very close to the historic centre, so that in about 8/10 minutes it is possible to reach the Arena of Verona. The area offers many good value for money hotels, shops and many non-tourist restaurants.
If you move westwards from the historic centre you will find the Basilica of San Zeno, which gives its name to the district of the same name. This is an area of Verona full of hotels and accommodation facilities but also services and shops. If you arrive by car, this is also a suitable area because many facilities have parking spaces here.
There are a number of flats and residences in the area, as well as medium-high hotels suitable for those seeking a relaxing stay within walking distance of the centre.
In addition to the Basilica of San Zeno, the district is also home to the Castelvecchio Museum, and twice a week there is a fruit and vegetable market and on Sundays a small flea market. For its convenience, the type of facilities and the various services present, the area is often chosen by families with children.
Those looking for cheap accommodation but not too far from the centre can look at the Veronetta district, which is known to be the university quarter. Situated along the eastern bank of the Adige River, Veronetta is only a few minutes’ walk from the city centre by crossing the Pietra bridge, the Ponte Nuovo bridge or the Navi bridge.
This was the original core of the city so much so that the Roman Theatre and the Castel San Pietro, which offers one of the most beautiful views of Verona, are located here. The Natural History Museum, the Giusti Garden and the upper San Nazaro Park are also in the area. Being a university area, it is full of clubs, bars and restaurants with often very affordable prices.
On the western bank of the Adige is the Borgo Trento district, which is ideal for those looking for cheap accommodation with parking. This is mainly a residential area, very quiet and with a few small bars. Here you will find the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes, the Alessandro Canestrari Public Gardens and the Franz Josef I Arsenal.
From Borgo Trento it is possible to reach the centre with a nice walk or by public transport. This district, however, does not have many restaurants or clubs, so if you are looking for evening entertainment this may not be the right area.
Veronafiere is the district in which the Verona trade fair is located and every year hosts important international events such as Vinitaly and Fieracavalli. The exhibition centre is located in the southernmost part of the city not too far from the Verona Sud exit (on the A4 motorway) and the Verona bypass. The area is well connected to the centre by public transport and there are numerous car parks, as well as several shopping centres.
The facilities in the area are more business-oriented with services and special attention to those attending trade fairs. In the period of major events, prices can undoubtedly be very high, while throughout the rest of the year one can find favourable offers in good facilities. Veronafiere is a particularly suitable district for those who arrive in the city by car and want accommodation outside the centre but well connected.
